INTERNATIONAL ACCOUNTS PAYABLE PROFESSIONALS-NORTH TEXAS CHAPTER

Quarterly meeting held on November 17, 2004 .  There were 45 attendees at this meeting.

Lunch and networking started at 11:00 .  

Don called the meeting to order at 11:00 .  The food had not arrived, so John Pollock with Resulte’ introduced the founder and CEO of Resulte’, Rex Kurzius. He gave a brief introduction about Accounts Payable in today’s employment market.   Rex stated several Job Recovery Facts, one example that Dallas ’ unemployment rate had fallen from 6.7% in June to 5.7% in September.  Rex discussed the A/P Position breakdown, number of A/P positions by year and the 2004 A/P positions at Resulte’ compared to total positions.  Rex also discussed accounting best practices that has been implemented at Resulte’ Universal.  (Click here to view the Power Point presentation)

Don Johnson, Vice President of the NTIAPP, welcomed the attendees.  Sandy Champion, President of the NTIAPP, thanked Sabre for facilitating the meeting and Resulte’ for providing lunch for our quarterly meeting. 

Don reported that as of November 15, 2004 the North Texas Chapter of IAPP had 175 members with 5 new members.  The new members are James Cook with American Express Tax and Business Services, Robin Hood with KPMG, LLP,  Gwen Perkins with Army & Air Force Exchange Service,  Amy Shaw with Douglass Distributing and Janet Taylor with The Willow Creek Group.  Introductions were made and non-members were invited to fill out membership applications.  Sandy Champion stated that anyone that becomes members of IAPP before the first of the year will receive a complimentary CAPP certification study manual with their membership. 

Sandy asked if everyone had filled out a ballot for the election of officers for the next two year term, January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2006 .  She commented that there was an additional officer position formed.  It is for chairing a membership committee.    Kimberly Addison with Resulte’ has volunteered to fill the position to network with area businesses to promote IAPP and increase membership.   Sandy stated that the North Texas Chapter of IAPP was the largest Chapter, besides a Chapter that takes 6 states, and we are only 1/3 of the State.  Sandy also stated that Barbara Coakley, that could not be at the meeting today, expressed interest to continue as Webmaster.

Dennis Fields with DocuData, introduced George Magnuson with the Rockwall Police Department.  Mr. Magnuson gave a presentation on Identity Theft.  He gave a very informative presentation on how to protection yourself from identity theft. (Click here to view the Power Point presentation)  

Sandy announced that all current officers were re-elected to another term to serve from January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2006 .  List of officers are:

            Kimberly Addison, Membership (newly formed office)

 Chapter business was discussed:

  • Education Committee – Melvina Floyd, member of the Education Committee, reported 52 individuals sat for the CAPP in the Fall window, which brought the IAPP total to 474.  Sandy stated that she and Melvina will be traveling to Orlando for an Education Committee and would be giving a report at the next meeting.

  • Membership Promotion – Sandy stated that IAPP was promoting a membership drive until the end of the year to receive CAPP Certification Study Manual, a value of $50.00 for new members.  Sandy also stated that with Kimberly Addison promoting IAPP in our daily contacts of local businesses will also increase our local chapter’s membership.

  • Benchmarking Survey - Sandy reminded everyone that the Benchmark Survey was due December 10th.

  • A/P Recognition Week – October 18-22, 2004 Sandy stated that the A/P Recognition Week moved from March to October this year.  She asked if anyone celebrated in October and asked if anyone did anything special.  One idea was that the AP department did a personality trait, which was very interesting.

  • APA - AP/Disbursements Preparing of Year-End &2005– Sandy stated that she attended the 1 day seminar.  She said that there were no changes to 1099 for this year and that the course was very informative.  She stated that Steve Scotti, also with Wyndham International, was at the Balance Consulting 1099 course that was being held today

  • Nat Goodman Classes – SOX & Best Practices – Sandy stated that Nat Goodman was putting on several informative courses.  Several members had attended the one on SOX & Best Practices.

  • 2005 IAPP Forum - San Diego - April 24-28, 2005 - Sandy stated that she would keep the local chapter informed on any low airline ticket rates or anyone could go to Travelocity and check prices.

  • Sandy stated that the next meeting would be February 16, 2005 to be held at Oxy Inc., hosted by Janet Taylor with Willow Creek Group.  The discussion topic will be Automation in AP presented by Dennis Fields with DocuData.

Sandy stated that if any of the members had a question that would like to go out to the membership, email the question to her and then she would send the question to the membership.  This helps eliminates vendors getting email addresses to solicit business.  Jan Wallace stated that the discuss group found on the IAPP website was an excellent resource for networking.

  • Sandy Champion, Wyndham International, won a pouch, squeeze ball, bendable stick, post-its, world globe finger ball, and a tool kit given by Concentra, 2 lighted magnifying cards given by IAPP, an insulated lunch bag given by Hunt Oil Company, a bag of peanut brittle given by Brittle Twins Candies, and a tote bag given by Wyndham International. 

  • Louise Costa, Concentra, won 2 stainless thermal mugs given by Trammell Crow Company, coasters given by Texas Industries, a $20 gift card given by Michael’s, 2 lighted magnifying cards given by IAPP, a bag of peanut brittle given by Brittle Twin Candies, and a tote bag given by Wyndham International.

  • Dennis Fields, DocuData, won a mouse pad given by Freeman, binded note pad given by Perot Systems, Cross pen given by KeM, plastic covered mug given by Trammell Crow Company, CD holder given by First Choice Power, 2 lighted magnifying cards given by IAPP, and a tote bag given by Wyndham International.

Sandy thanked everyone for coming to the meeting and the Roaming Gnome for having us at Sabre.  She wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and a Happy New Year.

The chapter meeting adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
