INTERNATIONAL ACCOUNTS PAYABLE PROFESSIONALS-NORTH TEXAS CHAPTER

Quarterly meeting held on May 19, 2004.  There were  56 attendees at this meeting.

Lunch and networking started at 11:00.  

Don Johnson, Vice President of the NTIAPP, called the meeting to order and welcomed the attendees.  Sandy Champion, President of the NTIAPP, asked for a round of applause for Don Johnson, Steve Lancaster, Diane Helbling and all the Allstate Insurance Company staff for providing the facility and lunch for our quarterly meeting.  Sandy also added that she is now working for Wyndham International and could get Friends and Family Rates at any Wyndham if anyone was interested.

Don reported that as of May 11, 2004 the North Texas Chapter of IAPP had 178 members and 11 new members.  The new members from Blockbuster Entertainment Group,WebLink Wireless, Inc, NRECA, Trammell Crow Company, Classic Cable, Inc, Atrium Companies, Precept Builders, Austin Commercial, Wilmer Hutchins School District, ST Microelectronics, Allstate Insurance Company, Alcatel USA, Inc, PRG-Schultz, McMurry University, and Footstar, Inc.  Introductions were made and non-members were invited to fill out membership applications.

Don Johnson introduced Jennea O’Brien with PricewaterhouseCoopers and local member of IAPP, who in turn introduced Joanne Gibson, Senior Manager with PricewaterhouseCoopers.  Joanne gave a Power Point presentation on (see attached) Sales & Use Tax Automation.  Joanne gave an excellent presentation on the subject.  She stated with over 77,000 different tax rates, State, County, City, Stadium, etc, each company has to decide internally how in depth the company wants to be as far as taxing purposes.  Questions can be directed to Jennea.

Chapter business was discussed:

  • AP Outsourcing – Don Johnson, with Allstate, reported that the consulting firm investigating Allstate’s possibilities to outsource the AP department was still in the process of investigating and that he hoped to have more information to share at the August 18th meeting.
  • Education Committee – Melvina Floyd, member of the Education Committee, reported on the Item Writing Meeting that was held in Orlando.  Melvina also reported that during the spring time period that 60% of the individuals that took the CAPP exam passed and that there were currently over 500 CAPPs.
  • Website & Group Email Update   Barbara Coakley, NTIAPP’s webmaster, asked that everyone make sure their email address is correct with the National office.  She stated that several companies have fire walls and to notify your IS department that emails will be received from our local and national email addresses.  
  • A/P Recognition Week(Mar 15-19) –  Sandy Champion stated that Wyndham gave out Bears,  “I’m An AP All Star” figures and certificates.  Several others said what they did during that week.
  • IAPP Forum in Orlando (April 25-29) - Sandy stated that the North Texas Chapter was represented well at the forum with 64 members attending.  She also reported that there was an officer’s workshop and our chapter outshined the group with most representation, since we are the largest chapter of IAPP and only represent 1/3 of a State.  Sandy stated that the 2005 IAPP Forum will be held in San Diego and the end of April.  Jan Wallace, Secretary of the local chapter, stated that the exhibitors were very welcoming during the breaks at the forum.
  • IRS - TIN Matching – Jan Wallace, Sandy Champion and Regina Liba discussed their experiences with the IRS Matching Online. 

 Sandy stated that she had spoken to Karen Sparks, member of the APA American Payroll Association about a joint meeting.  Sandy is working out details.  Sandy also acknowledged that the Dallas Chapter of APA was the Chapter of the Year. 

Sandy stated that the next meeting would be August 18th to be held and hosted at The Freeman Companies in Dallas to discuss 1099 Automation Outsourcing and IRS On-line Matching.  The November 17th meeting will be hosted by Resulte and at Sabre in Southlake and topic to be discussed is personal identity theft presented by Dennis Fields with DocuData.

 Congratulations to the following people who won door prizes:

  • Steve Lancaster, Allstate Insurance Company,  won a golf towel & pen given by PricewaterhouseCoopers, golf shirt given by Resulte Universal, travel bag given by Hunt Oil, travel mug given by Texas Industries and a 2004 Daybook – Women’s Steps to a Healthier US given by Perot Systems.

  •  Josie Collins, Evercom Systems, won a tote bag & calculator clock radio given by Fast Tax, 2004 Daybook – Women’s Steps to a Healthier US given by Perot Systems, 2 coffee mugs given by Sabre and 2 coasters & pens given by DocuData.

  • Heather King, Apptricity, won a 2004 Daybook – Women’s Steps to a Healthier US given by Perot Systems, tumbler given by The Freeman Companies, CD holder & lighted pen given by First Choice Power, Keychain given by Texas Industries and a tote bag from a previous IAPP Forum.

  •  Melvina Floyd won a  2004 Daybook – Women’s Steps to a Healthier US given by Perot Systems, 2 pens from IAPP, $25 TGI Fridays gift certificate given by Carlson Restuarants Worldwide and “Alfred Hitchcock and Number 17 DVDs give by Blockbuster.

 The chapter meeting adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
